Learning Objectives
The aim of the lessons is, also, to provide students with the necessary tools to be able to choose and analyze the traces of the past in order to elaborate new analyses and historiographic interpretations
Prerequisites
A good knowledge of European and Italian medieval history is mandatory, as it is the knowledge of the main lines of the history of the Church in Medieval Europe
Teaching Methods
The course will be articulated through frontal lessons of the teacher, presentation of some written sources and discussion of them with the students. Priority will be given to the seminar form and teacher-student interaction

Type of Assessment
In the regular exam appeals there will be oral tests based on the reading and interpretation of the texts suggested by the teacher
Course program
The course will be divided into two parts. In the first, students will be provided with the main outlines of Western monastic history, from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages. In the second part, the study of monasticism and contemplative traditions in Renaissance Italy will be addressed, with a special focus on the example of the Vallombrosian order.
